My last job for the day involved managing the "Hop on the Band Wagon" venue--a city bus that was turned into a traveling show. My post was at a music store and involved handing out free tickets to passengers. Every half hour, a new band would lug their instruments onto the bus, set up at the back, and entertain folks on a twenty-minute ride around town. While there, I got to talk to and joke with several different bands as they came and went. Maria got to meet a couple of bands while she was working, and had lunch with a seven-member band called "Holy Sheboygan."
Along College Avenue and on side streets, young musicians, carrying guitar, violin or keyboard cases mingled with a public that came looking for a good time, and to listen to original, live music. I smiled as I saw several young musicians, one carrying a stand-up bass, hurriedly crossing the street, apparently late for their gig on the bus.
After working hard and making new friends, Maria and I got to relax and listen to some music at a couple of venues. It was a long day, but lots of fun.
