The show was set up chronologically, complete with an Ed Sullivan look-alike who introduced the English Lads’ first visit to the United States (nicely coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of their actual introduction to us via the Ed Sullivan Show). Ed, with his trademark hands on the hips and “really big shew” filled the gaps during set changes, even chatting with Topo Gigio on one occasion.
Maria and I’ve seen one other Beatles tribute band live. They sort of looked like the Beatles, and that particular show had some technical issues that made me suspect the music was pre-recorded, leaving me feeling indifferent about them.
The show began with the Ed Sullivan show debut, complete with commercials for Anacin and Pillsbury. After a short break, they came back and did songs from a few years later. There was an intermission that allowed the band to change into full Sergeant Pepper regalia for the trippy music of the late sixties, including Yellow Submarine. The band ended the evening with the final Beatles songs prior to the group’s breakup (thanks, Yoko), complete with John playing a white baby grand piano.
On the way home, Maria and I sang out loud the songs that were running through our heads. And in our minds, we sounded great—just like the Beatles.
All you need is love! (ra-ta-ta-ta-dah!) All you need is love! (ra-ta-ta-ta-dah!) All you need is love, love. Love is all you need!
